A haunting piece of seventeenth-century history, this design reproduces the famous frontispiece from The Discovery of Witches (1647), a pamphlet published by the notorious Witch Finder General, Matthew Hopkins. The original illustration depicts Hopkins alongside several accused witches and their supposed familiars, including the strangely named Vinegar Tom, Pyewacket, Sacke and Sugar, and Grizzel Greedigut. Created as propaganda to support the witch hunts sweeping across East Anglia, the image was intended to convince readers that witchcraft was real and that the persecution of suspected witches was justified. Today, it stands as a fascinating and unsettling glimpse into one of the darkest chapters of British history. Rich in folklore, superstition, and historical intrigue, this shirt transforms an authentic piece of historical ephemera into a striking wearable conversation piece for lovers of folklore, gothic history, and the darkest corners of the past.
